It’s a fight between Black aldermen and Latino aldermen jostling for power over the new city ward map. THE RECAST: There is an ongoing battle in your city over redistricting. ![]() This interview has been edited for length and clarity. I asked Rush about how to resolve this ward fight, his activism - and whether he plans to seek reelection in 2022. The two blocs are engaged in a protracted fight over how to redraw the city’s 50 wards which will determine the balance of power in the city for the next decade. The city’s demographic shifts are at issue in the ongoing battle between the Black and Latino caucuses on the Chicago City Council. (Rush makes an appearance here.) We started in Chicago where the declines are particularly acute. Here at The Recast, we launched The Next Great Migration series earlier this week, focusing on broad demographic shifts happening in cities with the largest Black populations. The future president described that Democratic primary loss as getting “my rear end handed to me.” He’s been challenged for his seat numerous times, including resoundingly defeating then-Illinois state Sen Barack Obama in 2000. He later became an alderman, working alongside Harold Washington, Chicago’s first Black mayor, before being elected to Congress in 1992. His foray into politics began as co-founder of the Illinois Black Panther Party in the 1960s. “I can’t even imagine myself retiring into some kind of easy chair.” ![]() “I’m going to be an activist as long as I’m here in the land of the living,” Rush told me this week.
